Who we are

Slum to Stage is a creative arts initiative that provides foundational and intermediate dance training to children and young adults in under-resourced communities across Abuja.

Through dynamic performing and creative arts programs, we empower participants to grow both artistically and academically, unlocking their potential and building confidence for a brighter future.

What we do

At Slum to Stage, we offer preliminary and intermediate dance training to children and young adults in underserved communities across Abuja.

Our programs use the power of performing and creative arts to inspire growth, boosting both academic performance and artistic expression. We create safe spaces where young people can discover their talents, build discipline, and develop confidence through dance and movement.

Why we do what we do

Chidinma's Story

A Student in the program

chidinma-mobile

Chidimma is a seven-year-old girl living in a small community in Abuja. She attends an affordable government school in Gwarimpa. Before Chidimma leaves for school on most days, her parents are usually engaged in heated arguments. Although she is seated in class.

Chidimma's mind wanders off reliving her experiences at home and dreaming of a life under different circumstances. Several times, she imagines herself on a stage, dancing to a crowd or, to her own shadow, twirling and taking giant leaps with the aim of reaching for the stars. On these days, she is snapped back to reality by her teacher's sudden yell.

This is often followed by a question asked for the sole purpose of humiliating her for 'lack of attention' in class.

Chidimma is corrected with compassion by her dance instructor and teammates, further emphasizing the importance of team work. Chidmma is also encouraged to create dance routines of her own which she teaches to the other dancers. This has brought about a significant shift and increase in her confidence and self-esteem.

Testimonials

A huge thank you for the incredible impact you’ve had on my daughter, Alice. Over the past year, I’ve watched her grow in confidence, grace, determination, and strength. Her transformation extends beyond ballet—even her academics have improved. She came 1st in her class! I’m so proud of her, especially seeing how much joy she finds in dancing and how far she’s come.Alice holds you in such high regard.Your professional and caring approach has earned you deep respect from your students—and from parents like me.

Ada'Ada's Mum

The Slum to Stage program helps children connect with their creative and artistic essence. It gives them the opportunity to transcend limitations—and the freedom to become.

Dr KDr Kaffy Shafau (DANCE BOSS)

Slum to Stage is bridging the gap between aspiring dancers and the captivating world of ballet. They deserve commendation for their inclusive approach to training. Unlike many traditional ballet schools, Slum to Stage actively encourages participation from all backgrounds regardless of gender, socio-economic status, or previous dance experience making ballet accessible to a much wider audience

Ballet is rarely accessible in this part of the world. It’s truly commendable that Slum to Stage is giving children the opportunity to experience and learn this captivating dance style
